A thrilling novel leading into the new CBS series, Una McCormack’s The Last Best Hope introduces you to brand new characters featured in the life of beloved Star Trek captain Jean-Luc Picard—widely considered to be one of the most popular and recognizable characters in all of science fiction.
I am a HUGE Star Trek fan, so when I saw The Last Best Hope show up for preorder, I quickly did just that. I am currently watching Star Trek: Picard as it airs each week and I wanted to learn more about what happened between The Next Generation and the current show.
The writing style of The Last Best Hope was great for the book. Everything flowed together and most of the time I could not put the book down! I really liked how different section took place in different places are revolving around the major conflict of the Romulan star going supernova.
My favorite character of The Last Best Hope is Raffi, by far. She is kickass and gets the job done. She also does an amazing job of keeping Picard grounded and things organized. I found her to be funny and was sad to see her home life deteriorate because of the mission.
The Last Best Hope lived up my expectations for finding out about what happened between the two series. But unless you read The Countdown comics books, you will not learn how Zhaban and Laris came to live with Picard at the vineyard. The ending of the book did feel a little rushed though. After the destruction of Mars, the book quickly looked to wrap up. I would have liked to see more of Raffi’s response to Picard leaving Starfleet and more of what happened right after.
It intrigued me the way that Starfleet was so willing to put as many resources as possible behind the mission. But as soon as the mars attack happened they canceled the mission and banned all synthetic lifeforms. As Picard points out of many different occasions, this was not the Starfleet we had all known. Ultimately this was also the reason why Picard left Starfleet.
The Last Best Hope is currently one of my top favorite Star Trek novels. Throughout the book. we got to see so many different parts of the Star Trek Universe from the federation council to inside Romulan space. The book really brings the series of events together and made a great read.
There are currently a few more episodes left of Star Trek: Picard season one left to air, but I would highly recommend watch the first one or two episodes before starting The Last Best Hope.
